EPISODE 10

Letty

“Hit me baby one more bite”

Chris was already in the kitchen flipping pancakes and Carlos sat with a cup of steaming coffee. This man drank his coffee black, but I still snatched the cup from him and took a gulp of the bitter stuff.

“What do you want on your pancakes, my killer princess?” Chris asked with a smile and a wink, and he put the perfect fluffy pancakes on my plate.

“Nutella, please.”

He placed the jar and a spoon next to the plate in front of me and kissed me deeply.

“Enjoy your breakfast, killer.”

Ramon sat on the counter. He does not like to sit at the table. Carlos had a tablet open in front of him and was checking something, and Angel ran away to catch a shower.

“Who knows the colonel’s schedule?” I asked, stuffing my mouth with a big amount of pancake dipped in Nutella. The Nutella melted, and it was all soft and gooey and delicious. I could not help myself.

Carlos replied. “He runs every morning around six, right after the end of curfew, then goes to the gym.”

“Every morning?”

“Yeah. He teaches close combat to the newbies. The colonel believes it’s good for the newbies to get to know him in a relaxed environment like the gym.”

“And I could go, right, because I’m a newbie?”

“Yes, technically.” Carlos put the tablet down.

I glanced at the wall clock. It was 5:30 and still pitch-black outside. “I need to know him better. I think he likes me and I’m totally non-threatening. You guys can take care of Angel.”

“I can shadow you,” Ramon said as he offered me a cup of coffee, exactly the way I love it, sweet and creamy and with a hint of vanilla.

“It’s better if you keep your ears and eyes open and look after Angel.”

Ramon nodded and nibbled at his pancakes.

I knew he was hungry. I will have to talk to Angel about the fact that Ramon looked gaunt, as if he was losing weight.

Angel stepped into the kitchen. He was dressed in the black uniform the guys wore, his hair still moist. Angel kissed me and stole a sip of coffee from my cup.

“Angel, are you okay if I join you later at the lab?” I asked.

“Sure. It’s not as if you are actually my assistant.”

“Hey, my knowledge is you know, okay. It’s more connected to literature and fiction, but hey.”

“What are you up to?”

“She’s snooping,” Chris said from the stove just before finishing more pancakes for the guys.

“Snooping is such an ugly word. I prefer to say that I am gathering information.”

“Whatever you do, Killer, be careful, okay?” Chris turned his head to me, and I saw real love and worry in his eyes.

“Guys, these are a few humans. I can deal with them. I lived for months alone in a zombie infested New York.”

Carlos took my hand in his and kissed it. “Maybe you did, but zombies aren’t running a hidden agenda. I’m going to see the guys at the weapons depot and see what they know.
